Cattle, Politics to Bussiness issues

When the Government of Australia suspended the live cattle export to Indonesia at 8 June 2011 then canceled the ban at 7 July 2011, relation is changed from G to G (Government to Government) into B to B (Bussiness to Bussiness). But still, they concern about Animal Welfare isue in handling live cattle since transportation from Australia to Indonesia, raising in farm, until slaughtering in Slaughter house.

The exporters from Australia and Feedloters from Indonesia have made MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) about Animal Welfare to keep this cooperation move on. It means the quota of live Cattle can be gotten when Feedloter can guarantee all pipeline is follow the procedure. More than this, exporter provide equipment and material to support these. When there is one or more violation of Animal Welfare isue in handling live cattle, they will stop the quota.

Indonesia gives importation quota about 600,000 heads of Australia live cattle, but after banned in a month the realization could reach more less 500,000 heads. Indonesia Ministry of Agriculture did census of cattle population in Indonesia in 1-30 June 2011. The data collected are Cattle 14.8 million heads; Dairy 597.1 thousand heads and Buffaloes 1.3 million heads.

Indonesia Ministry of Agriculture state at early 2010 when cattle population reach around 14.2 million heads, then no need beef importation. Now the data show that the cattle population is 14.8 million head, but Government still allocate 500 thousand live cattle and 93 thousand ton beef importation to fullfill national beef consumption. It means national beef consumption supplied from local beef production 61.88%, feedlot 18.75%, and beef import 19.37%.

For next year, the importation issue is depend on Indonesia Ministry of Agriculture policy. If looking from the data, probably the importation of live cattle and beef will significantly reduced. But, politics is not simple like bussiness, who knows?
